The Many Months of October

Originally the eighth month in the oldest Roman calendar, October gained its name after the Latin for eight, "octo". Later, after the calendar was reformed with the addition of July & August, October became the tenth month, but retained its original name. Aside from moving places in the calendar, October also has several things to celebrate. For instance, let's look at the summarized list below, courtesy of Nationaldaycalendar.com:

Antidepressant Death Awareness Month

Adopt A Shelter Dog Month

Bat Appreciation Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Eat Better, Eat Together Month

National Apple Month

National Reading Group Month

National Chili Month

National Pizza Month

National Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month

Right Brainers Rule! Month

Photographer Appreciation Month

Raptor Month

National Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Awareness Month

National Kitchen & Bath Month

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

So, which nifty celebration(s) to pick? Well, I thought the most crochet appropriate choices would be: Bat Appreciation, Pizza, Kitchen & Bath Month, & All 4 Awarenesses (Pregnancy/Infant Loss, SIDS, Breast Cancer, & Domestic Violence). Onwards to the roundup!

Bat Appreciation Month

They fly, sleep upside down, & are a natural pest control! This month was made to celebrate the bat, whether it be 1"(Bumblebee Bat) or 16" (Flying Fox Bat). Known to be creepy and perfectly associated with Halloween (Thanks, Bram), this awesome mammal deserves some non-creepy acknowledgement. National Pizza Month

It's round, warm, & customizable. It surfaced in 1889 when it was made for Italian King Umberto I & Queen Margherita on a trip to Naples. And now you know where the Margherita Pizza came from. 😉. Have a slice of fun while making these patterns:

The most utilized rooms in the home. The room where we create meals with our families & the room where we relax from a long day. Redecorate these highly trafficked rooms with these patterns:

All 4 Awarenesses (Pregnancy/Infant Loss, SIDS, Breast Cancer, & Domestic Violence) Month

Awareness. By definition: Knowledge or perception of a situation of fact. October is full of various Awareness months. I have focused on the 4 I think need more awareness. So, spread the awareness with this pattern made in the appropriate color(s):
