BUFFALO CHECK BEANIE
Written in US terms
Information
Final Measurements:
Adult Small/Child (5+) [21” circumference, 8.5” length (including brim)]
**Any size may be done as long it’s a multiple of 6**
Gauge: 12 DC x 8 rows (without brim & SC row) = 4”
Supplies needed:
Any Worsted Weight yarn, at least 2 colors.
I used scrap Red Heart Super Saver in Black, Light Gray, Heather Gray, and Olive Green
I/5.5 mm, or size needed to achieve gauge
Tapestry Needle
Pompom (optional)
Pattern Stitches:
RD: Round
CH: Chain
CH SP: Chain Space
SC: Single Crochet
SC BLO: Single Crochet Back Loop Only
SS: Slip Stitch
DC: Double Crochet
DC2TOG: Double Crochet two stitches together aka Decrease
ST(S): Stitch(es)
YO: Yarn Over
FO: Finish Off
[ ] x #: indicates instructions that are to be repeated and the number of times to repeat
Pattern Notes:
If you would like a tight fit, use the recommended hook (or whatever gets you the gauge.) If you would like a slouchy fit, use 1 hook size bigger than gauge.
When working DC into skipped STS of previous rows, make sure to work OVER the CH created.
Changing color with SS: Insert hook into next stitch, YO with new color, pull through stitch and loop on hook.
CH at beginning of RD does NOT count as a ST.
{#} indicates final row count.
If using a different multiple of 6 (other than 60), the last stitch for each round may be different than that listed. Adjust as needed.
If using 2 colors, I recommend making CC into CA & CD into CB.
My Colors: Black (CA), Heather Grey (CB), Light Gray (CC), Olive Green (CD).
When measuring the brim, make sure to stretch it out before measuring. This will give you a more accurate reading and a better fit. If your multiple of 6 is just under your head size, I recommend sizing up to the next multiple. (i.e. This hat is 60 STS, which measures to about 21”. Say your head is 22”. I would up the count to 66 STS.)
Brim
With 1st color (CA), CH 9.
Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook and each following CH. {8 SC}
Row 2: CH 1, turn. SC, SC BLO x 6, SC. {8 SC}
Rows 3-60 (or your multiple of 6): Repeat row 2.
When finished, fold band in half, lining up the starting row and last row. Ch 1. SS into 1st ST of starting row AND last row, going into both loops of each row as you do. SS across. {8 SS}
Do NOT FO! Turn brim right side out. We will now be working in joined RDs.
Body
RD 1: With CA still attached, CH 1 and SC evenly around edge of brim. SS to 1st SC with 2nd color (CB). {60}
RD 2: CH 2, turn, DC in same ST and next 2 STS. [CH 3, skip 3 STS, DC x 3] x 9, CH 3. SS to 2nd CH of beginning CH 2 with 3rd color (CC). {30 DC, 30 CH}
RD 3: CH 3, [skip 3 DC of previous RD, DC in next 3 skipped STS of RD before previous RD, CH 3] x 9, skip 3 DC of previous RD, DC in next 3 skipped STS of RD before previous RD. SS to 1st CH of CH 3 with 4th color (CD). {30 DC, 30 CH}
RD 4: CH 2, [DC in the next 3 skipped STS of RD before previous RD, CH 3, skip 3 DC of previous RD] x 10. SS to 2nd CH of beginning CH 2 with CA. {30 DC, 30 CH}
RD 5: CH 3, [skip 3 DC of previous RD, DC in next 3 skipped STS of RD before previous RD, CH 3] x 9, skip 3 DC of previous RD, DC in next 3 skipped STS of previous RD. SS to 1st CH of CH 3 with CB. {30 DC, 30 CH}
RD 6-15: [RD 2-5] x 3. (You will only do RD 4 & 5 twice) {30 DC, 30 CH}
RD 16: CH 2, [DC in next skipped ST of RD before previous RD, DC2TOG in next 2 STS of previous RD, CH 2, skip 3 DC of previous RD] x 10. SS to 2nd CH of beginning CH 2 with CA. {20 DC, 20 CH}
RD 17: CH 2, [skip 2 DC of previous RD, DC in next skipped ST of RD before previous RD, DC2TOG in next 2 STS of RD before previous RD, CH 2] x 9, skip 2 DC of previous RD, DC in next skipped ST of RD before previous RD, DC2TOG in next 2 STS of RD before previous RD. SS to 1st CH of CH 2 with CB. {20 DC, 20 CH}
RD 18: CH 2, [DC in next 2 skipped STS of RD before previous RD, CH 2, skip 2 DC of previous RD] x 10. SS to 2nd CH of beginning CH 2 with CC. {20 DC, 20 CH}
RD 19: CH 2, [skip 2 DC of previous RD, DC in next 2 skipped STS of RD before previous RD, CH 2] x 9, skip 2 DC of previous RD, DC in next 2 skipped STS of RD before previous RD. SS to 1st CH of CH 2 with CD. {20 DC, 20 CH}
RD 20: CH 2, [DC2TOG in next 2 skipped STS of RD before previous RD, CH 1, skip 2 DC of previous RD] x 10. SS to 2nd CH of beginning CH 2 with CA. {10 DC, 10 CH}
RD 21: CH 1, [SC in next DC of previous RD, DC2TOG in next 2 skipped STS of RD before previous RD] x 10. SS to beginning CH 1. {10 SC, 10 DC}
**If creating a smaller size hat, you may do SC for the next RD if the hole is small enough**
RD 22: CH 2, DC around. SS to 2nd CH of beginning CH 2. FO, leaving a 4” tail. {20 DC}
Using a tapestry needle, weave tail through tops of STS in last RD. Pull tight to close top and weave in end. Trim any excess.
**Optional: Add pompom to top.
