The second month of the year, it is named after the Roman word, Februum, or purification. This is because of the purification ritual, Februa, that was held on February 15th (in the old lunar Roman calendar) during the full moon. It was added to the calendar by the Roman King Numa Pompilius in about 713 BC and remained the last month of the calendar until about 450 BC. At this time, Decemvirs moved it to be the second month, where it has remained. There were 11 different observances in Ancient Roman during February and there are several things we can observe during the month today.
