The Floral Month of September!

Somewhere between Summer and Autumn lies September. Cool enough to enjoy nights outside, and hot enough that flowers can still bloom. This month's flowers (yes, there's two!) are the aster and morning glory. But what does each flower mean or represent?

According to Almanac.com, the aster has many meanings and was very popular in ancient times. They were known to be highly sacred to the Greek and Roman gods and were said to have come from the tears of the goddess, Astaea (pronounced Uh-stray-uh). They also used to symbolize revolution and were used to honor to those lost in war. Some other general symbolic meanings of the aster are:

  • Love & wisdom.

  • Patience & Beauty.

  • Faith

  • Friendship

  • Purity

The aster comes in many shades, including white, yellow, pink, purple, red, and blue, which can determine some individual meanings:

  • Red: Devotion & Passion

  • Pink: Love & Kindness

  • Purple: Wisdom

  • White: Innocence

The second flower is the morning glory. A beautiful, yet not widely thought of flower. According to Almanac.com, morning glories grow on a fast-growing vine and have a unique schedule, which lends to their name: they open in the morning and are closed by the afternoon. They are a conflicting flower when it comes to their general symbolic meanings:

  • Some say that it symbolizes love that was never returned

  • Others say it symbolizes undying love.

The morning glory is known for its blue and purple shades, but also comes in pinks, reds, and whites, which can determine some individual meanings:

  • Blue: Enduring love, Desire, & Power

  • Purple: Grace, Wealth, & Hopefulness

  • Pink: Gratitude & Energy

  • Red: Passion & Strength

  • White: Purity & Innocence
