The Floral Month of October!

Spooky season hath arrived! Bats, ghosts, witches, and falling autumnal leaves are everywhere. With those things the scents of fall begin to rise: crisp leaves, spiced apples, and still flourishing marigolds. This month's flowers (yes, there's two!) are the marigold and cosmos. But what does each flower mean or represent?

According to Gardenia.net, the marigold has meanings in several cultures. Generally, the marigold is thought to represent warmth, creativity, and positive energy. They are often associated with the sun due to the vibrant color and shape. This also means they are thought to bring happiness and good fortune. The marigold comes in many vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red. In various cultures they can also represent:

  • Love

  • Loyalty

  • Devotion

In Hinduism, they can be used as offerings to the gods or decorations on homes and temples during certain celebrations. They are also quite fragrant and are edible.

The second flower is the cosmos. A beautiful, yet not widely thought of flower. According to Gardenia.net, cosmos have a daisy-like appearance and come in wide rang of colors, such as white, pink, red, orange, and yellow. Their name comes from the Greek word "kosmos", which means "order" or "harmony." This is reflected in what they represent:

  • Harmony

  • Peace

  • Balance

They can also represent:

  • Love

  • Innocence

  • Modesty
