The season of thanks has begun! Cornucopias, turkeys, pilgrims, and the gathering of friends & family. These are all things which are prevalent (or at least they used to be. *ahem* Walmart *ahem*) at this time of year. We also see the rise of some rather lovely scents: Pumpkin spice, roasted turkey, autumn leaves, and this month's birth flowers: the chrysanthemum & peony. So, what does each flower mean or represent?
According to Gardenia.net, the chrysanthemum has a general meeting as well as individual color meanings. Generally, the chrysanthemum represents longevity, joy, and optimism. In some cultures they are associated with friendship, support, good luck, and happiness. The marigold comes in many vibrant shades of white, yellow, pink, purple, red, and orange. Certain colors can represent different things:
Red: Love and deep passion
White: Purity, innocence, and honesty
Yellow: Neglected love or sorrow
Violet: A wish to get well
The second flower is the peony. They have multiple meanings and representations. Generally, they can represent prosperity, good fortune, happiness, love, romance, compassion. In certain cultures, they can bring protection and ward off evil spirits. There are other meanings for other cultures. For instance:
China: Known as the "king of flowers" and can symbolize nobility, honor, and wealth.
Japan: They symbolize good fortune, bravery, and honor.
They also come in beautiful shades of white, pink, red, and yellow. These colors have their own meanings as well:
White: Purity, innocence, and humility
Pink: Romance, love, and happiness
Red: Honor, respect, and passion
Yellow: Wealth, prosperity, and good fortune
