The Floral Month of May!

Well, we've had P-L-E-N-T-Y of April rain showers. Time for the May flowers! (Not the kind that drop Pilgrims of at Plymouth Rock either. 😆)

The flower, well in this case flowers, associated with the month of May are the lily of the valley and hawthorn. Both flowers can be used in bouquets for weddings, but they differ in their meanings.

Lily of the valley comes in a beautiful teardrop shape which has several mythological origins. According to The Farmer's Almanac, in Greece it is believed that Apollo created the flower for nymphs to walk on. In Christian lore, it is believed to have sprouted either from Eve's tears after being expelled from the Garden of Eden or the tears of Mary at the site of Christ's crucifixion. The lily of the valley symbolizes motherhood, sweetness, purity, and humility. It can also signify a return to happiness.

The hawthorn, which is a member of the rose family, has many mythological uses and beliefs surrounding it. According to The Farmer's Almanac, it can be used in wedding processions, according to Greek legend; to heal a broken heart, according to Celtic legend; to slay vampires when carved as a stake, according to Serbian legend; It was associated with the Great Plague during Medieval times and, therefore, thought to be followed with illness and death if a blossom was brought in inside. It comes in white or pink and symbolizes hope but has also been the pagan symbol of fertility.
