Back to school! August is, generally, the time children return to school to begin their next year of learning. My daughter enters Kindergarten this year. Wow how time flies! Anyways, back to our own floral lesson. The month of August has two birth flowers: The gladiolus and the poppy. But what does each flower mean or represent?
According to Bouqs.com, the gladiolus is known for its vibrant colors that are present on the tall, elegant spikes of blooms. Its sword-shaped leaves give the flower its name since "gladiolus" is derived from the Latin word gladius meaning "sword." Some general symbolic meanings of the gladiolus are:
Faithfulness & infatuation. It is traditionally used as a 40th anniversary flower for this reason.
Love at first sight, enchantment, fidelity, according to floriography or Victorian Flower Language.
Intellect
Good Character
Remembrance
The gladiolus comes in a wide range of colors, including red, pink, yellow, purple, & white, which can determine some individual meanings (according to Urbanstems.com):
Red: Passionate Love
Yellow: Friendship
Pink: Maternal Instincts & Compassion
Purple: Grace & Mystery
White: Purity & Innocence
Next is the poppy. This flower brings to mind red flowers, remembering fallen soldiers, & the Wizard of Oz. That last one may only be me. 😅 According to Bouqs.com, poppies trace back all the way to Mesopotamia, Egypt, & Greece. These ancient cultures are where the connection to sleep, death, & resurrection come from. Some general symbolic meanings are:
Remembrance. They are widely used on Memorial Day in America & Remembrance Day in the UK.
Sleep, death, resurrection, dreams, imagination, at least for the Opium Poppy.
The poppy also comes in a wide range of colors, including red, oranges, pinks, yellows, purples, & white, which can determine some individual meanings:
Red: Happiness
Yellow: Success
Pink: Non-romantic Love
Orange: Good Health & Well-Being
White: Sympathy & Condolences
